What’s the issue?

The newly elected NDP/Green Government in BC has announced that there will by a referendum on proportional representation by the end of November 2018,

Who is impacted by this issue?

Those impacted by a new voting system will include every eligible voter in the province of BC as well as all candidates and political parties in the province.

What is ideal?

Proportional representation is a fairer voting system that better represents British Columbians and gives more weight to every vote that is cast. Currently BC uses a first past the post system where there is only one candidate elected per riding and the candidate with the greatest number of votes is elected, leaving those who voted for other candidates with no representative in their riding. First past the post doesn’t accurately reflect who British Columbians want to represent them and instead gives almost all the power to the winning party no matter how small the margin.

Proportional representation gives voters more choice, a better chance of electing someone who aligns with their values, a choice of candidates who reflect actual voters, more cooperation and collaboration, and better decision making,

What role is the government currently playing?

The government has announced that a referendum will occur by the end of November 2018, will be done by mail-in ballot, and will pass if 50% of greater of votes support it. If chosen, the new system would be enacted by 2021 for the next provincial election.

What role should the BC government play?

Leading up to the referendum, there should be careful thought and consideration going into the phrasing on the mail-in ballots and the messaging or campaigning that will lead up to it.
