The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (or FCM) is a lobbying group that officially represents 2000 Canadian municipalities, including Nelson, Creston, and Salmo. Although it has no formal power, FCM has been extremely successful at guiding public policy on issues related to Canadian cities and urban life. It has the feel of a quasi-government organizations since it is the primary way that cities negotiate with the federal government and it administers a number of funds of behalf of Canadian municipalities, including the Green Municipal Fund.

It’s provincial counterpart in BC is the Union of BC Municipalities.

History

In 1901, the Union of Canadian Municipalities was formed to represent the interests of municipal governments. Another association, the Dominion Conference of Mayors was established in 1935.[1] In 1937, these two associations were amalgamated into the Canadian Federation of Mayors and Municipalities which in 1976 would be renamed the Federation of Canadian Municipalities
